If you've ever been confused by military time, in which all hours are represented in four digits (e.g. "0200" instead of "2 a.m."), this article is for you. Knowing how to convert military time can help you better understand someone else's schedule or make sure you arrive to an event on time. Military time for 7:15 p.m., for example, would be 1915. In this article, we'll explain the basics of how to convert from military time to standard formatting so that you always know exactly what 15 1915 means!
The easiest and most accurate way to convert from military time to standard time is by using a 24-hour chart or calculator. This is especially helpful when converting times that represent an hour and a half or more because of the pesky "half-past" issue (e.g 7:30 pm would be 1930). All you need to do is simply look up the numbers on the chart or input them into the calculator and it will clearly provide the standard format of the time (7:15 pm in this case).
If you don't have access to a chart or calculator, fear not! It's also possible to manually convert military times into their corresponding "standard" times by following these steps:
1) Look at the first two digits in your military time (in this case, 15). Since all hours are technically two digits with leading zeros added beforehand (this does not apply for hours greater than 23), this means that your "15" actually represents 3 p.m in regular language;
2) Now take the second two digits and add 60 minutes onto your calculation from step 1 (15 + 60 = 75). Divide this answer by 60 and you will get 1.25, which can then be read as 1 hour and 25 minutes;
3) Finally, add one hour onto your answer from step 2 as state above because 6:00 plus 1 is 7:00—the start of our original example—and finally add any remaining minutes not accounted for onto your answer so far (25 minutes equals 7:25 pm). Therefore, when all steps are accounted for, 15 1915 corresponds to 7:15 pm in standard time!
